On March 2nd, 2008 detainee Arturo Alvarez died at the Middlesex County Correction Center owing to medical neglect.

The New Jersey Civil Rights Defense Committee (NJCRDC) expresses its full solidariity with the outrage expressed by more than ninety detainees being held at the Middlesex County Correction Center who have signed a petition in protest.

The NJCRDC calls for an immediate investigation into this unnecessary death and an end to the Middlesex County contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

We also commend the courage of these men in bringing to light the conditions in the Middlesex detention center.
